DAY 1 AUCKLAND - PAIHIA

Kia ora and welcome to ‘Te Ika-a-Maui’ New Zealand’s North Island!

 

We meet in Auckland and head north to Paihia. We stop to admire the largest Kauri Tree left standing 'Tane Mahuta' - God of the Forest. From here we check out the amazing golden sand dunes at the entrance to Hokiangi Harbour before arriving at our accommodation tonight.

 

After a homecooked dinner we have a fun evening as we get to know our fellow travelling crew, friendly Tour Manager and Tour Assistants.

DAY 2 PAIHIA

Today we enjoy a guided tour of the historic Treaty of Waitangi grounds and buildings and visit the museum to gain an understanding of the background to the signing of the treaty.

 

This afternoon is free for you to enjoy this beautiful place. There are plenty of activities for you to choose from, take a boat ride to the outer islands, learn to paddle a Waka, visit historical Russell or just chill by the sea - the choice is yours!

 

Tonight we enjoy a homecooked dinner.

DAY 3 PAIHIA (Cape Reinga Day Trip)

This morning we set off early from Paihia and travel through spectacular scenery as your driver shares fascinating stories about Northland's history. This exhilarating tour will see you speeding down massive sand dunes, driving along sand and surf and meeting a 2,000 year-old kauri tree in an ancient kauri forest.

 

We walk down to the iconic Cape Reinga lighthouse and see the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean crashing together below you. Soak up the amazing atmosphere and strikingly beautiful vistas, and don't forget to snap a selfie with the famous signpost!

DAY 4 PAIHIA - ROTORUA

We depart Paihia and our first stop is at the very unusual KawaKawa toilets, from there we travel through Auckland and down to Matamata ‘Hobbiton’.

 

Here we take a tour of the movie site of both the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. We walk through ‘Middle Earth’, explore the Hobbit holes and have time for a juice at the Green Dragon (and maybe dance under the ‘Party Tree’).

 

Travelling on, we arrive in Rotorua - the geothermal capital of New Zealand. Tonight we visit the Polynesian Mineral Pools for a soak.

DAY 5 ROTORUA

Our first stop of the day is Te Puia; the premier Maori cultural centre in New Zealand and a place of gushing waters, steaming vents, boiling mud pools and spectacular geysers.

 

After Te Puia, we have some free time to explore the town before travelling to the Skyline Gondola for a scenic trip to the top of Mt Ngongotaha. Once we are at the top we take 2 Luge rides down through the forest tracks. 

 

Tonight we are in for a very special night as we enter the world of Tamaki. We take the Tamaki Waka to Tamaki village where we discover Maori art forms, ancient rituals and traditions, experience thrilling song and dance and then eat a delicious and authentic Maori Hangi.

DAY 6 ROTORUA - TAUPO

We say goodbye to Rotorua and travel south from here to Huka Falls, New Zealand’s largest waterfall by volume, we visit our secret Mud Pool on the way.

 

We then stop at Spa Park Taupo where you can dip your feet or soak in the natural hot springs which meet the crystal clear Waikato river and onto Taupo where you’ll have time for lunch, explore the town and beautiful lakefront.

 

This afternoon we take a scenic lake cruise to see the beautiful Maori Carvings on the rock wall.

DAY 7 TAUPO - WELLINGTON

This morning there is freetime for some last minute photos or souvenir shopping then we carry on south travelling over the Desert Road and along the Kapiti coast to Wellington.

 

Our accommodation is close by to lots of cafes and restaurants, so dinner is your choice tonight.

DAY 8 WELLINGTON

This morning we visit Te Papa Museum, from here we take the cable car to the top of Kelburn Hill for wonderful views over the city and harbour.

 

This afternoon is free for you to enjoy this city, which has great shopping, museums and art galleries.

 

We meet up tonight for a homecooked dinner.

DAY 9 WELLINGTON - TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK

Our first stop is the famous Beehive and Parliament Buildings before retracing our steps north to picturesque Tongariro National Park.

 

We ride the ‘Sky Waka’ Gondola up the North Island’s highest mountain, Mount Ruapehu for lunch up the top with stunning views all over the Central North Island.

 

We enjoy a short walk to view a beautiful waterfall before checking into our accommodation, then there's time this afternoon for a soak in the spa pools before enjoying a hearty dinner.

DAY 10 TONGARIRO - WAITOMO

Today we head North to Waitomo (Wai= water Tomo=large opening or hole) known throughout the world for the Glow-worm caves.

 

We visit a local farm and watch a sheep shearing demonstration and see how the dogs manage to move the sheep into the pen. We have lunch before we move onto Waitomo Caves. We enter via a grand entrance, and then follow the narrow paths down deep into the earth, finishing with a boat trip in the dark under a canopy of sparking glow worms.

 

Later we check out the Discovery Centre to find out more about this fascinating region.

 

Tonight is a homecooked meal.

DAY 11 WAITOMO - AUCKLAND

This morning we visit Hamilton Gardens then stop in town for lunch before heading to Auckland.

 

We drop you off at Auckland Airport at 4pm with an amazing bunch of new friends and ‘ferntastic’ memories.
